Reflection on “The Life of David Gale”
I came across this movie because of another class I take this semester played it, I was not expecting it to be an interesting film but actually it was quite good. The movie is about a successful professor, David Gale, who was convicted for death sentence because of murder and rape crimes. And Britsey Bloom, a journalist, is trying to find the mystery behind this crime to prove David’s innocence. The movie was filmed from a present perspective while David told his story to Britsey in jail, and with a big reveal at the end.
After denying his student for giving her a better grade, David was framed by the student for raping her. Although that is not the truth, David was fired from his job and his family left him because of this reason. He went from a successful man straight to a man with nothing left. He was also accused for murdering his partner who was working with him for being against capital punishment, which means that they try to save people from death penalties. However, with a murder crime accused on him, he was sentenced to death penalty, how irony.
While talking to Britsey in prison, David kept telling her that he was being framed and he hoped for her to give him justice. As the day of the death penalty came close, Britsey was still not able to find evidence to prove it. Surprisingly, right on the last day of David’s sentence, Britsey got a video tape from an anonymous person which showed that David’s partner was in fact not murdered, but suicided. With the evidence in hand, Britsey had to rush to the prison before David gets executed. However, she was not fast enough, and he was dead before justice came.
What makes the movie more interesting is that after David’s death, Britsey got another video tape. The tape showed that David was fully aware of the truth of his partner’s death, and the whole thing was planned by him and his partner to prove the imperfection of capital punishment.
After watching this movie, I felt quite overwhelmed by the story. It was pretty interesting of how the story unfolds, but I think that what the character did to prove his idea against death penalty was too over. Sacrificing a two people’s lives merely to prove their point and still not being able to change the law was totally unnecessary.
Well, good thing that it was not a truth-event-based movie, so it is still worth to watch.
When I read the plot of the truth, I was surprised by it. I could not imagine that someone was willing to die in order to prove his thoughts. Moreover, his parents were also willing to commit suicide to attend his son's goal. Nevertheless, I agreed with your point that it was too over. Although they successfully prove their ideas, they was unable to change the law since they were dead. It is interesting to know this movie and your story is also interesting. If I am free, I will go to see this movie.🤩
